The draft Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) identifies the aspirations of young people aged 12 to 25 living, working or studying across our local government area and outlines a four-year action plan.

It will guide Council in meeting the needs of local young people and contribute to making Cessnock a vibrant place of opportunity where all young people are supported to grow, learn, be safe, belong, work and contribute.

The draft YES identifies 60 actions in response to feedback from over 650 people covering the following themes:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Recreation
  • Education and employment
  • Community participation

"During the consultation process for the YES and through conversations with other young people it has been clear that the inclusion of a youth voice when planning for young people is essential for success. Including a youth voice helps young people feel included, encourages us to get involved and ensures that programs, activities and events are both interesting and youth friendly.

Young people have a valid point of view. We are experts on what is happening in our world. We need safety, excitement and fun. We want to be involved in what is happening in our lives and our community. We want adults to ask us questions and listen to our answers."

More information

The draft Youth Engagement Strategy forms part of our commitment to a connected, safe and creative community, and fostering and supporting community leadership, key objectives of the Cessnock 2027 Community Strategic Plan
