Cessnock City Council will host its annual Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony on 26 January. Additionally, there will be free entry to Cessnock and Branxton Pools and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness Centre on the day.

The annual Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to recognise individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to our community, demonstrated excellence in their field, or are considered role models for the generations to come.

The ceremony will commence at 10am in the Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC), beginning with a citizenship ceremony, where 18 local residents will join thousands of migrants across the country to become Australia’s newest citizens during the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship.

The citizenship ceremony will be followed by the announcement of the Australia Day Award recipients, including Cessnock Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and many more, and will conclude with a light morning tea in the PACC foyer. Anyone wishing to attend must book their free ticket via this link.

Members of the community are also encouraged to take advantage of the free entry into Cessnock and Branxton Swimming Pools and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness Centre.
Free entry to each facility will be available during the following hours:

  • Cessnock Pool 9am - 6pm
  • Branxton Pool 9am - 6pm
  • Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness Centre 10am - 3pm

Each location will be hosting a free barbeque between 10am and 2pm, as well as a variety of lawn games and music for the whole family to enjoy! There’ll also be free lamingtons!

Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said whether you want to celebrate outstanding community members, local residents taking the step to citizenship or spend a fun free day at our public swimming pools, Cessnock City Council has something for everyone this Australia Day.

“It is shaping up to be a great day and I encourage everyone to come along and join the celebrations,” said Clr Suvaal.
