Accidental Counsellor Mental Health Training

Lifeline Workshops
What is Accidental Counsellor training?

Cessnock City Council and Resilience NSW have collaborated with Lifeline to deliver FREE mental health training to bushfire affected members of the Cessnock Local Government Area.

Lifeline's Accidental Counsellor workshop is aimed at those who would like to be able to safely and effectively support friends, family, colleagues, and strangers who are in distress or experiencing a crisis.

The workshop will provide you with basic skills and a structure to enable you to provide immediate support and assistance using the 'Recognise, Respond, Refer' model.

What you'll learn can be applied in many contexts and will provide you with skills in active listening and effective gentle questioning. You will also learn how to ask openly about suicide risk and be able respond safely, whatever the answer.

No pre-existing knowledge is required and the course is open to all residents of the Cessnock Local Government Area.

Please note: This course is not intended to train participants to offer professional counselling services.

Delivery

This course uses a blended training model, with 3.5hrs delivered in a virtual classroom by qualified Lifeline trainers and 1.5hrs online, self-paced.

Registration

The first stage is for you to register so that Lifeline can activate your access to the 90 minute eLearning component that precedes your workshop participation. Once registered, you will receive two notifications - the first will give you access to the eLearning component and the second will be from Lifeline's Community Training Coordinator with instructions on how to join the online workshop.
