I’m excited that the 2024 Mayoral Scholarship Program is now open for applications. The Mayoral Scholarship program is something I’m truly proud of, as it financially assists local residents to achieve their educational goals at TAFE or university. The program has been running since 2002 and, with the help of local sponsors, has awarded 235 scholarships to the value of $588,000, which is just incredible. It’s not too late for local businesses to sign up and sponsor a local student. By contributing $2,500 and becoming a Mayoral Scholarship Program Sponsor, local businesses will receive promotional benefits while supporting our youth, residents and local jobs. If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor, simply visit Council’s website here and complete the simple online form.

Last month we kicked off construction on an exciting project in Heddon Greta, the new Avery’s Lane Park. I’m pleased to see investment in brand new playground facilities for local families in this growing community. I know how much I enjoy taking my kids to local parks and I know they’ll be so excited to have a new playground to explore.

Speaking of exciting new developments, Cessnock City Council recently commenced work to revamp the Bridges Hill Skatepark with upgrades with brand new ramps, rails and bowls to improve the skating experience. It’s important to me that we continue to deliver high quality facilities for youth in our community. I’d like to thank residents who gave their time to attend consultation sessions to provide recommendations on the new skatepark, which were used to inform the final design. The upgrade received grant funding from the Department of Regional NSW as part of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The grant program supports projects in regional communities to upgrade amenities such as parks and sporting fields.

Caravan lovers, it’s that time of year again for our Caravan safety workshops. Led by qualified instructors from Transport NSW, there will be two sessions held in Cessnock on Monday, 11 March at 9.00am and 1.00pm. It’s a great opportunity to come along and ask questions and gain practical knowledge to apply to your own caravans to ensure your adventures are not only enjoyable but safe and secure. Spaces are limited, so make sure you register early (via this link) as previous workshops have sold out quickly.

Recently we held our first Coffee with a Councillor of the year at Weston. It was a great to catch up with so many local residents. Our next Coffee with a Councillor is at Bellbird Community Hall on the 27 March at 10am and I hope to see you there.
