Head off illegal dumping – always ask for a tip receipt

The Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad is highlighting the problem of illegal dumping of demolition waste. As part of the Small Acts Big Change program a video is being produced to educate community on how everyone can play a role in reducing illegal dumping.

The focus of the video is on contractors doing the wrong thing. Unfortunately well-intentioned homeowners and builders employ the wrong contractors who end up dumping waste into bushland.

The video will feature an investigator with the RID Squad, who took the film crew to a site today that experiences high levels of dumping incidents.

“Today we took a look at a site on Mindaribba Land Council land where 19 loads of demolition waste was dumped illegally last year," said Mr Robbs.

"We have investigators right around the region, and we investigate medium to high level illegal dumping incidents in the Hunter and Central Coast.”

The best way to ensure your demolition waste doesn't end up in bushland is to always ask for a receipt from a waste management centre. Most of us want to do the right thing, but you have to be careful about who you work with.

Cessnock City Mayor, Cr Pynsent said we all have a role to play.

"Small Acts Big Change is all about making small changes in our lives that contribute to big change when it comes to waste. Illegal dumping is an ongoing problem in our region, and we all have a role to play in ending it.”

The Small Acts Big Change project is a NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.
