Council women breaking barriers this International Women's Day

As the world gears up for International Women’s Day on 8 March, Cessnock City Council takes pride in its commitment to supporting and empowering women in the workplace, no matter the role.
The theme for International Women’s Day this year is Inspire Inclusion, and Council has seen a growing number of women taking on traditionally male-dominated roles within Council.
Cessnock City Council’s People and Culture Manager, Michelle Honeyman, said this trend challenges stereotypes, and paves the way for inclusivity and gender equality in the workplace.
"From civil construction and painting to engineering and leadership positions, women are stepping into these roles with skill, determination and new perspectives," said Ms Honeyman.
"By providing opportunities for skill development, career advancement and leadership training, Council is creating pathways for women to reach their full potential, in whatever career path they choose.
"We also really encourage our staff to further their education, and currently have 17 female staff members completing tertiary studies through work, six trainees, and 46 female employees with cert IV and higher tertiary qualifications."
Council currently has 259 female employees, giving the workforce an almost 50/50 split.
There are also 33 women in Council’s outdoor workforce, including four female apprentices - a painter, mechanic, and two out of three civil construction apprentices.
Lara, a third-year Civil Construction Apprentice for Cessnock City Council, said she could never imagine herself working in an office.
"My Dad inspired me to work in construction, and I really enjoy my job, and the people I work with. I’m so grateful that Council has given me the opportunity to do something I love," said Lara.
Cessnock City Council is also proud of the high number of women in leadership roles across the organisation, with 35 women holding leadership positions. This International Women’s Day, Council remains committed to advancing gender equality, and setting an example for the wider region.
