Cessnock City Council is proud to support Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) NSW, which is from Monday 3 to Sunday 9 May 2021. An initiative of the Information and Privacy Commission NSW (IPC), PAW aims to highlight the importance of privacy and raise awareness for public sector agencies about how to protect the personal information of the people they serve.

Council takes a proactive stance in championing the rights to privacy that individuals have. Council implements a ‘privacy by design’ approach to digital projects and builds good privacy practices into decision-making. This approach also informs the design and structure of Council’s information systems, business processes, operations and services.

The theme for this year’s campaign is Make Privacy a Priority. Everyone can do this by reviewing everyday privacy settings, and informing NSW government agencies and Council if you think your privacy has been breached.

Cessnock City Council’s General Manager, Lotta Jackson said many aspects of Council’s operations involve the use of personal information, and Council is committed to ensuring obligations are met.

“Council has a Privacy Management Plan which ensures we’re educating our staff about their obligations when handling personal information. Council also has a Privacy Statement that informs both the community and Council staff about how personal information will be used, stored and accessed after it’s collected.”

To learn more about privacy laws in NSW and how to protect personal information visit the IPC website. The IPC can also assist with complaints about a NSW government agency’s conduct or handling of personal information.
