Background
The George Downes Drive Safety Improvements Project at Bucketty is funded by the NSW Government under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.
The Towards Zero Safer Roads Program aligns with the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan, reflecting the government's dedication to achieving the goal of zero deaths on the NSW road network.
Projects will deliver important road infrastructure at high-risk locations that can help save lives.
Scope of Works
This project encompasses Safety Improvements including:
- Shoulder widening
- Tree removal
- Road side drainage improvements
- Pavement upgrades and resurfacing
- Increased safety improvements (guardrail and motorcycle protection rail)
- Line marking and delineation
Project update
We are pleased to announce the completion of the George Downes Drive Safety Improvements Project.
The works were undertaken as a part of Council’s commitment to delivering safer and more reliable road networks through the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program. The program aligns with the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan, reflecting the government's dedication to achieving the goal of zero deaths on the NSW road network.

Location
The location of the construction works is around the intersection of George Downes Drive, and Great Northern Road, Bucketty which began 7 April 2025 and continued for approximately 12 weeks. The project overlaps the recently completed landslip project at Bucketty.

Traffic Management
A Traffic Management Plan were in place for the duration of the works and Variable Message Signs (VMS) displayed at various locations to inform residents and road users.
Traffic control and reduced speed limits were in place for the duration of the works.
