Cessnock City Council is thrilled to announce the return of its popular Clothes Swap event, which will take place at Bellbird Hall from 11am to 12.30pm on Saturday 23 March 2024.

This exciting sustainability event encourages participants to bring along good quality, pre-loved clothing items they wish to exchange with other like-minded individuals on the day.

On average, every Australian disposes 12 kilograms of clothing each year, with the vast majority ending up in landfill. We are not alone in our wastefulness – textile waste is a major issue worldwide, and if the current trend continues, 150 million tonnes of clothes will be landfilled by the year 2050.

Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said that by participating in the Clothes Swap, attendees will contribute to reducing textile waste, and supporting our environment, in a fun and impactful way.

"The Clothes Swap event is part of Council’s Less is More campaign which aims to change the way we consume products by encouraging residents to reuse, swap, repair, rent, borrow and share, rather than buy new," said Clr Suvaal.

"Events like these are always better the more people who are involved, so I encourage residents to gather friends and family, and come along to what is sure to be a fun-filled event."

This is a free event which is open to everyone, embracing diversity in style, size and fashion preferences. No bookings are required.

Clothing check-in commences at 11am and participants can bring up to 10 items. For every item checked-in, participants will receive a token to use as currency once the swap opens at 11.30am. You can take one item for each token.

This is one of a series of sustainability events taking place as part of Council’s Less is More campaign. To find out more about this event, and more like it, visit the Sustainability event calendar here.
