Some of Cessnock Local Government Area’s best and brightest have been recognised with Australia Day Awards.

Liam Woods, 37, was named Citizen of the Year at a ceremony at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock on January 26, among 13 individuals and groups acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the local community.

Mr Woods was nominated for his strong advocacy for The Leukaemia Foundation, Stem Cell Donors Australia, and Transplant Australia.

He has helped others by sharing stories and experiences of his own transplant journey and raising vital funds for these important organisations and their research.

The Cessnock man has also represented Australia in the sporting arena at the World Transplant Games and Transplant Football World Cup, and organises events, matches and training sessions for Transplant Australia Football Club.

Peter Torenbeek was named Senior Citizen of the Year and Cessnock High School’s Interact program won the Junior Citizen of the Year category.

Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said those who received awards on Australia Day had set shining examples of selflessness, hard work, and community spirit.

“Australia Day is a fantastic opportunity to recognise the exceptional work of those in our community who go above and beyond to improve the lives of others,” said Clr Watton.

“Congratulations to everyone who received an Australia Day Award – the community appreciates your tireless efforts.”
