Incorporating our military history into Branxton-Greta Shared Pathway

Published on 16 November 2023

Cessnock City Council is pleased to announce the tender for the final stage of the 3.3km Branxton to Greta shared path and cycleway will open this month.

It can also be revealed that Cessnock City Council has expanded the scope of the project to facilitate the realisation of long-proposed veteran memorial.

Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said the incorporation of specially designed reflection points is a superb initiative achieved through close collaboration between Council and the Hunter ANZAC Memorial.

"Council have designed unique midway stations along the length of the path, in consultation with the Hunter ANZAC Memorial, that can be utilised to honour each branch of the Australian military," said Clr Suvaal.

"These reflection points will include bespoke seating and bike racks, along with a circular extension of the path around a central feature.

"It is pleasing to see this project recognising the military history of the region and incorporating it into the design.

"The shared path and cycleway will be a welcome addition to the area when completed in the first half of next year, and provides an opportunity for users to reflect on our local military history whether they are residents or visitors."

Following acceptance of drainage designs by the gas distributer, a tender to complete the project will open this month. Works are expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.

This project is funded through a grant from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and Council contributions.
