Branxton continues to thrive as a vibrant village and a key heritage destination in the Hunter Valley. Since the opening of the Hunter Expressway in 2014 and the ongoing staged development of Huntlee’s New Town, the Branxton subregion has experienced significant growth and transformation.
Cessnock City Council has secured funding from Regional NSW to deliver another stage of the upgrade to the Branxton Town Centre, spanning from Church Street/Paterson Lane towards Anvil Creek Bridge. This revitalisation project is designed to enhance the village character of the area by narrowing the former highway corridor, improving the pedestrian experience, optimising parking, and introducing landscaping to create a more welcoming and attractive environment.
The project has commenced investigation and design, and construction works are to commence in the coming months, this includes the following:
These improvements will help create a safer, greener, and more connected space for residents, businesses, and visitors to enjoy.
Concrete path, kerb and garden bed works are largely complete on the northern side. The final small section is awaiting a water connection from Hunter Water, after which the remaining works can be completed, including planting out the larger garden beds with trees and understory planting.
The raised pedestrian crossing and new asphalt concrete (AC) pavement have been completed.
Remaining works include:
Footpath and median island on the southern side of Maitland Street completed in December 2025.
Tree planting and gardens to be completed on southern side throughout January.
Construction of drainage, kerb and gutter, footpaths to commence on Northern side of Maitland Street from the 12th January 2026.
