Background

The Apex Park Redevelopment Project, located at the intersection of Allandale Road and Maitland Road Cessnock, aims to deliver much-needed improvements to the purpose and usability of the Park. The project involves the revitalisation of Apex Park into a safe, inclusive and attractive community space. In consideration of the Park's location across the road from Cessnock Pool and close to local businesses, the project includes pedestrian and accessibility improvements, repaved carpark surface, landscaping and seating elements for community recreation and use.

In 2022, Council adopted the Apex Park Masterplan which included community consultation to inform an initial concept of what the site could look like.

In 2025, Council received funding through the Australian Government's Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program to bring the project to life.

Late 2025, Council's Capital Works team appointed Collins Williams as the Principal Design Consultant for the development of detailed design documentation.

Early works

This year Council's Capital Works team together with Collins Williams have been working through an early design and technical investigation phase in consultation with Transport for NSW and Hunter Water. As well as communicating with nearby businesses, residents, local groups and users to obtain early input into the project design. It is anticipated the draft concept plan will be on public exhibition mid-2026.

As part of the detailed design package, the Principal Design Consultant has completed a comprehensive geotechnical assessment of Apex Park, addressing both structural considerations and potential contamination. The findings will inform and guide the ongoing design process.

It is anticipated that by the end of this year the project will undertake a draft Review of Environmental Factors (REF) which will go on public exhibition late-2026 for community feedback.
