Get familiar with soil and ‘Meet the Microbes’

Council is holding two workshops in May on microbes and how they influence soil health and growing. The workshops will run as a series, but people can attend either one or both.

The first will take place at Cessnock Library from 10am-11am on Saturday 2 May 2026, covering topics including: what soil is and why it is important, how microbes influence soil health and function, the key difference between soil and dirt, functions of key soil food web creatures, and how to foster healthy soil. This workshop is suited to gardeners, farmers and anyone interested in the natural world – and will be followed by morning tea.

The second workshop will be held at Cessnock Library from 9am-12.30pm on Saturday 23 May 2026, and will be particularly valuable for commercial growers such as cattle graziers, olive growers and vignerons. It will provide an in-depth examination of the soil food web – learn what it is and why it is important for growing healthy plants, our health and the health of the planet. Participants are invited to bring a small soil sample to be examined under the microscope and the workshop content will be tailored to what the results reveal.

Tickets for the first workshop are $5 each plus a booking fee, while the second workshop is $10 per person plus a booking fee. Reserve your place by searching ‘Meet the Microbes’ at  https://humanitix.com/au

Please email environment@cessnock.nsw.gov.au if the cost of a ticket will prevent you from attending.
