It was disappointing to hear the Supercars will not be returning to Newcastle in 2024. Since commencing in 2017, the Newcastle 500 was a spectacle, quickly becoming a feature race each season.

Motor sports are part of our culture here in the Hunter, and it felt long overdue when the Supercars finally made their way here. It will be a terrible shame for it to be lost to our region.

As an alternative location, why not here in Cessnock? With our region’s abundance of space and breathtaking sceneries, it’s my intention to initiate conversations with the NSW Government and Supercars to host this spectacular event within our part of the region.

Speaking of incredible racing events, the Cessnock Mitsubishi Australian Postie Bike Grand Prix happened earlier this month, with the streets of Cessnock buzzing with the sounds of 110cc motorcycles for the seventh year running.

At a recent meeting, Councillors resolved to provide funding support to develop a documentary on the Australian Postie Bike Grand Prix, as part of the latest round of the Visitor Economy Grants program.

The program is part of Council’s commitment to promote local tourism and support local initiatives that contribute to economic growth within Cessnock LGA.

The Australian Postie Bike Grand Prix was one of four successful applications that received funding in the third round of the program, along with sponsorships of the 2023 Wine Country Talent Quest, 2024 Wildlife Park Community Day, and 2024 Wavemaker National Conference.

I’m also pleased to announce two outstanding individuals will be inducted as Freemen of the City in an official ceremony on 1 December. This is the highest recognition the City of Cessnock can offer to those who have demonstrated exemplary service and dedication to our community, and is the first new entry to the honour in 4 years. Anyone interested in attending the special ceremony should contact Tracey Cocking on 4993 4210 or tracey.cocking@cessnock.nsw.gov.au, as numbers are limited.

With Christmas around the corner, Council is also encouraging local businesses and customers to embrace their creativity, by getting into the festive spirit and celebrating silly season though Christmas decoration displays!

Businesses will be judged on their shopfront Christmas displays, with the chance to win a $500, $300 or $200 gift card to spend within the community, while the top three most-liked customer selfies with a Christmas display will win a $200, $100 or $50 gift card.

And finally, don’t forget free all-day entry to Branxton Pool, Cessnock Pool, Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness Centre. We’re thrilled to be opening the gates to our local pools on Saturday 18 November for a day of aquatic fun!

Head to the Cessnock City Council Facebook page for more details.
