The Wollombi Flood Warning System is aimed at increasing community safety in a storm event in the Wollombi area. It's an action out of Council’s Wollombi Valley Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan 2012.
In 2016 Council received a NSW Floodplain Management grant for the design of a flood warning system for the benefit of Wollombi and upstream catchments. Singleton Council is jointly funding operation and maintenance costs. Once the project is complete flood warning alerts will be sent to residents about minor, moderate and major flood risks.
The project is progressing well with the first data recorded in February 2020 via the new rainfall and river gauges installed in Wollombi Brook catchment. The data from the rainfall gauges is accessible online to keep residents informed about catchment rainfall and water levels at Laguna, Millfield and Wollombi.
This information enables residents to make decisions during a storm event to stay safe. Previously this information was not available and it’s fantastic communities in the upper Wollombi Brook and Congewai Creek Catchment Area have access to accurate data.
The $240,000 project is funded under the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Floodplain Management Program.Residents can track the levels via visiting the Bureau of Meteorology.
