The vision for the CBD includes thriving retail opportunities, easy access to car parking and well connected, visually appealing public spaces. The new CBD will feature wayfinding signage, cycling opportunities and pedestrian friendly accesses.

You can view the background and history of the project on a timeline(PDF, 124KB).

The project is funded through the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund and NSW Governments Restart NSW– Resources for Regions Program. The grants are matched by funds from Council’s Capital Works Program.

The Cessnock Civic Precinct Revitalisation Program comprises a number of sub-projects. Stage 1.1 is the first part of a long term project that will transform our CBD.

Stage 1.1 has now been completed however, investigations are underway to identify the cause of the deterioration of the pavers in the Cessnock CBD Shared Zone.  A temporary repair has been undertaken to make the area safe until a permanent solution is delivered. Council will inform the community once a resolution has been identified and when rectification works will take place.

The safety of the pavement has been assessed, and while safe for vehicles and pedestrians, hazard signage has been installed to inform all road users.

Additional information on Stage 1.1

2021

Investigations are underway to identify the cause of and rectify approximately 120 cracked pavers in the Cessnock CBD shared zone. Council will inform the community once a resolution has been identified and when rectification works will take place.

The safety of the pavement has been assessed and, while safe for vehicles and pedestrians, hazard signage has been installed to inform all road users.

Council acknowledges that these repair works will cause more disruption in the CBD and thanks the community for their patience.

August 2020

Works have continued to south of Black Creek channel to formalise pedestrian access from the shared zone in Charlton Street to the pedestrian bridge over the channel. Council is in communication with the landowner of the private carpark adjacent to the Cinema complex to adjust the parking arrangement to suit the new pathway.

Shared zone

A 10 km/h shared zone has been introduced along the paved section of Charlton Street, on each side of Cooper Street.

Drivers are reminded that a 10 km/h shared zone is a road where pedestrians and other vehicles share the road safely. Drivers are legally required to give way to all pedestrians and not exceed the 10km/h speed limit.

It’s all about putting pedestrians first and slowing vehicles down in an area that has very high pedestrian activity.
