NAIDOC WEEK FILM SCREENING: ANGELS GATHER HERE | CHEEKY DOG | RINGTONE

A program of three wonderful films from across the country, presented on the big screen at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre.

Angels Gather Here is a story of hope and survival. Told with humour and love, the story follows Jacki Trapman as she journeys home to Brewarrina to celebrate her parents 60th wedding anniversary.

Cheeky Dog is a delightful portrait of young Tennant Creek artist, Dion Beasley. Dion Beasley is an Indigenous teenager who is deaf and has muscular dystrophy. He lives with his family in Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. With help from his teachers and carers, including Joie Boulter, Dion is encouraged in his skill at drawing, particularly drawings expressing his fascination with dogs.

Ringtone is a beautiful, funny and surprising film about the place of mobile phones in a contemporary Indigenous community. In the once-remote Aboriginal community of Gapuwiyak in northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, individual ringtones reveal rich insights into lives of the Yolngu people. From ancestral clan songs, animal calls and bird songs, to hip hop artists and gospel tunes, a Yolngu ringtone always comes with a great story.

Tickets to the NAIDOC Week film screening are free, however bookings are essential. Call the CPAC Box Office on 4993 4266 or visit cessnockperformingartscentre.com.au.

2022 National NAIDOC Poster

Ryhia Dank, a young Gudanji/Wakaja artist from the Northern Territory is the winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC poster competition for 2022 with her entry, Stronger.

The NAIDOC poster is a symbol of our survival as First Nations Peoples. NAIDOC Week brings us together from many different communities to celebrate our long history as custodians of this land. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will always communicate through the language of art because art connects us to our lands and spirits - it has, and always will be with us, from time immemorial to the far distant future.

“I created this piece after reading this year’s National NAIDOC Week theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! I knew straight away I wanted to do a graphic piece centred around our flags with text highlighting what we have been through and are still fighting for” said Ryhia. “I feel that this piece being black and white allows us to focus on the details and messages in the artwork”

Ryhia’s artwork was one of more than 300 poster entries, a record number for the NAIDOC Poster Competition. The National NAIDOC Committee would like to thank all those who entered the competition and encourages them to enter again next year.

For more news and information, or to learn more about Ryhia’s storywork, visit naidoc.org.au.
