Cessnock City Council's Mayoral Scholarship Program provides financial support for residents of the Local Government Area (LGA) to help achieve their educational goals at TAFE or university. It targets students undertaking studies in industries offering gainful employment in the Cessnock LGA, such as hospitality, tourism, education, engineering, medical, mining, communications and manufacturing.

The program has assisted 223 students since its inception in 2002.

“It’s our goal to have as many residents as possible achieve their higher education and career aspirations by providing essential financial support,” Cessnock Mayor Jay Suvaal said.

“This support allows them to focus on their studies and alleviates some of the stress associated with further education. I’m proud of this program and excited about the prospect of growing it with the support of local businesses.”

Since 2002, and with the help of local sponsors, the program has awarded scholarships to the value of $558,000.

Sponsors receive promotional benefits while supporting youth, residents and jobs in the area. Council is now seeking the support of local businesses to become sponsors of the program. This year, Council will also welcome sponsorship inquiries from individuals or families who may be in a position to become sponsors.
