Changes to Council's services and facilities

In response to the NSW Government's lockdown announcement, Council services, facilities and events have been impacted. Please see the below information regarding the status of Council's services and facilities:

Council administration building and Customer Relations

We're committed to ensuring a positive customer experience despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
 
Council's administration building and face-to-face customer services will reopen on Monday 18 October at 9am. While the administration building will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening to fully vaccinated people.

 

The Customer Service Centre will operate from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Duty planner, building surveyor and environmental health officer services will still be available via phone on 4993 4100.

Cessnock Waste Management Centre (CWMC)

Cessnock Waste Management Centre will reopened to the public on Monday 13 September 2021. You do not need to book and it will be open standard operating hours (8:45am to 4:30pm, 7 days a week).

Visitors MUST:
  • Check in using the QR code system on site
  • Wear a face mask at all times
  • Social distance at all times
  • Remain in your vehicle when not unloading 
Visit the Cessnock Waste Management Centre section of the website for information on waste vouchers, the Community Recycling Centre, alternate waste vouchers or disposing of problem waste.

Council meetings

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Council meetings will be conducted remotely until further notice.

All meetings are livestreamed and residents are encouraged to view them on Council's Facebook page from 6:30pm on the night of the meeting. 

Council events

All Council events have been cancelled per the current Public Health Order. Check back or visit Council's Facebook page to stay up-to-date.

Cessnock City Libraries

Face-to-face services at the Kurri Kurri library branch will reopen at 11am on Monday 11 October 2021.

Council has taken the opportunity presented by the lockdown to repaint the interior of Cessnock Library and as work is still in progress, the Cessnock Branch will not open until 9am Monday 18 October 2021.

Following the reopening, both branches will operate 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. 

While Cessnock City Libraries will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening these facilities to fully vaccinated people.

Cessnock Performing Arts Centre (CPAC)

CPAC will reopening from 11am to 4.30pm on Monday 11 October 2021. Following the reopening, CPAC will operate from 9am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. 

While CPAC will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening the facility to fully vaccinated people.

Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre (HVVIC)

The HVVIC will reopen on Monday 11 October and will be back to normal opening hours.

Monday – Saturday 9am – 5pm
Sunday and Public Holidays 9am – 4pm

While the HVVIC will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening to fully vaccinated people.

Cessnock Youth Centre Outreach Service (CYCOS)

CYCOS will reopen by appointment from Monday 11 October. The CYCOS facility will be available for community services who hire the venue and will be open for scheduled appointments with young people from this date.

At 80%, the service will be open for small youth group programs, which will need to be booked in advance. 

While CYCOS will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening to fully vaccinated people.

Arts and cultural centres

All arts and cultural centres, including Wollombi Cultural Centre, Richmond Main and Marthaville Arts and Cultural Centre will be closed from Thursday 5 August 2021 until further notice.

Re-open dates have yet to be determined. Future operations will be in line with NSW Government restrictions as prescribed in the Public Health Order.

RSPCA Hunter

RSPCA Hunter will be closed from 3pm Thursday 5 August 2021 until further notice.

A re-open date has yet to be determined. Future operations will be in line with NSW Government restrictions as prescribed in the Public Health Order.

On-site sewerage management system inspections

Council has cancelled standard and routine monitoring inspections of on-site sewerage management systems until further notice.

Amenities

All public toilets and BBQ facilities across the Cessnock Local Government Area are open.

Parks

All parks, including outdoor gyms, playgrounds and skateparks, remain open across the Cessnock Local Government Area.

To avoid hefty fines, please ensure you are adhering to lockdown rules when using outdoor facilities.

Sporting facilities

The Cessnock Civic Indoor Sports Centre will reopen on Monday 11 October to regular hirers at this stage, and won’t be taking casual bookings. 

While the the Cessnock Civic Indoor Sports Centre will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening to fully vaccinated people. 

From Monday 11 October cricket facilities will also reopen for training and curating of fields.

Tennis facilities

Tennis facilities are open from Sunday 15 August 2021 and will operate in accordance with the Public Health Order. Find out more from Tennis NSW here.

Recreational Vehicle (RV) areas

Council operated RV areas at Branxton and Kurri Kurri remain open.

Community halls

Community halls will reopen once 80% vaccination is achieved, pending the approval of COVID Safety plans.

While community halls will reopen, there will be strict guidelines in place to adhere with the Public Health Order, including only opening to fully vaccinated people.

Aquatic facilities

Following the approval of our COVID-19 Safety Plan, both Cessnock and Branxton Pools have reopened to fully vaccinated residents for both lap and recreational swimming. 

With NSW reaching 80% vaccination rate, we have removed booking system - fully vaccinated patrons (aged 16 and over) can come to the pool and enjoy a swim without the need to pre-book. There has also been an increase to capacity limits.    

While our local pools are hugely popular, Council has had to put strict conditions in place to comply with the Public Health Order.
These include:

  • all patrons must check-in via the Service NSW QR Code and show their vaccination status/passport  
  • residents over the age of 16 will need to prove they are fully vaccinated on arrival
  • there will be TWO recreational swimming sessions (9am - 12.45pm and 1.15pm - 5pm daily).   
  • the pool will close at 12.45pm for staff to complete cleaning of the change rooms and high touch points.  
  • lap swimming ONLY from 6am - 9am (Monday-Friday) and 7am - 9am (Saturday and Sunday).  
  • use of hand sanitiser on entry and exit of facility
