Cessnock City Council commenced Stage 1 construction works of a new skatepark at Crawfordville Park in Millfield last week.

Delivered in partnership with Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council, the project follows Council’s recently adopted Skate and BMX Strategy which identified community need for a local level skate facility to service the recreation needs of young people in Millfield, Ellalong, Paxton, Wollombi and Laguna.

The new skatepark will be the fifth in the Cessnock Local Government Area alongside skateparks in Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Greta, and the freestyle BMX facility at Bellbird.

The facility will incorporate both transition and street elements for a wide range of wheeled sports as well as seating, pathways and access to water and shade.

Council’s Manager Open Space and Community Facilities, Nicole Benson said that projected growth within the area will see a greater demand for youth spaces over time and the local community are excited about the delivery of this facility.

“Community engagement activities conducted with key stakeholders over the past two years revealed there is great enthusiasm for the new skatepark. It will have positive health and wellbeing benefits for young people, giving them a space close to home they can enjoy with friends and family while being active,” she said.
