School Leaders's Breakfast Presenter Stacey Currie

Today school students from across the Cessnock Local Government Area tuned in to the School Leaders’ Breakfast 2020 via Zoom.

It was a very different event than previous years due to the limitations of COVID-19 but Council were determined to see the much anticipated event go ahead. The virtual event saw nineteen schools join the conversation with Stacey Currie.

Speaker, Stacey Currie joined us from lockdown in Victoria and shared her story about growing up rough in the suburbs of Melbourne. The story involves Stacey becoming a mum at sixteen, being homeless and becoming a victim of domestic violence.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said the presentation touched on some very difficult topics and it’s important we have these conversation with our young people.

“Many young people are experiencing their own challenges at home or at school. Hearing from Stacey about her story of adversity and the lessons she learnt was extremely valuable.”

Stacey asked the students to think about what is holding them back and to consider their own limiting beliefs that stop them from achieving.

“We often have beliefs about ourselves that are born out of our own experiences and what people tell us about ourselves. We need to identify these beliefs to stop them limiting what we believe we can and can’t do. We need to think about the consequences of our choices and start building positive habits which really do have the power to change a life,” Stacey said.

The School Leaders’ Breakfast is part of Local Government Week 2020. A week to celebrate the role of local government in communities and the services local councils provide. For more information visit our Local Government Week page.
