Our tourism industry has been doing it very tough over the last few months. First bushfires and now a Pandemic. Our local businesses have been doing everything they can to survive and our community members have been doing their best to support them. It was a huge relief when the NSW Government announced that regional tourism will start again from June.

The Cessnock Local Government Area is ready to warmly welcome tourists back to the region. Cessnock City Council has been working towards this announcement rolling out vital funding, including $250,000 under the NSW Government’s Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Fund and another $100,000 for destination marketing under the Federal Government’s Disaster Recovery Fund.  We are moving as quickly as possible to see this funding injected into our community and ensure we are ready for visitors to return.

Last week Council announced the reopening of outdoor gyms, playgrounds, barbecue areas and public toilets across the Cessnock Local Government Area. The decision came in response to the NSW Government’s advice that these spaces were safe to enjoy again.

It is important that those choosing to use these facilities follow strict hygiene with frequent washing of their hands and adhere to social distancing. Signs have been erected at the facilities to remind residents of their responsibilities. Council has released maps identifying parks that have handwashing facilities. Congratulations to two outstanding sportsmen who have been nominated to be inducted into City of Cessnock Hall of Fame.  Simon Whitlock, a professional darts player and sports shooter, Olympian Daniel Repacholi have been nominated for their achievements.

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on the Draft 2020-21 Operational Plan that is now on public exhibition until Wednesday 17 June 2020. The Draft 2020-21 Operational Plan provides information to the community about Council's ongoing activities and the key initiatives to implement the Delivery Program.
