The last steps in the staged works to connect Cessnock to the Hunter Expressway were marked at a sod turning event in Weston this morning. Crews have started construction of a new permanent roundabout intersecting Government Road, Sawyers Gully Road, Hart Road and Gingers Lane.

Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent was joined by the Director Region North for Transport for NSW Anna Zycki and General Manager Lotta Jackson to mark the start of construction.

Cessnock City Mayor, Cr Pynsent said today was a significant milestone.

“Council has been working tirelessly to deliver this important safety upgrade for this intersection since it was first identified in a road safety audit undertaken by RMS in 2015. It’s fantastic Council has been able to secure the support of Transport for NSW who have provided $1.8 million for the construction of the new roundabout.”

The event also acknowledged completion of the first three major stages of the Gingers Lane project which has thus far seen pavement, kerb and gutter, drainage, safety barrier and road widening upgrades to the stretch of road between Frame Drive and Stringybark Place, Weston.

Council’s Acting Director of Work and Infrastructure, Katrina Kerr thanked the community for their patience.

“There have been a number of project challenges since the start of works including catastrophic fire conditions, higher than average rainfall through winter and resourcing issues due to COVID-19. Our teams have adapted and made good progress on the job.”

Stage four of the Gingers Lane upgrade is now underway which involves work from Stringybark Place up to the roundabout located on Hart Road. Council will continue to maintain access for residents to their properties and thanks the community for their patience and cooperation in negotiating the road closures detours necessary for the completion of works.

This project is jointly funded by the NSW Government's Restart NSW Fixing Country Roads program, Transport for NSW and Cessnock City Council.  For more information on the project visit the Gingers Lane project page on Council’s website.
