Kline Street bridge in Weston to be replaced

Cessnock City Council has successfully secured $650,000 under the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program for a new concrete bridge for Kline Street, Weston.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent welcomed the funding commitment that will allow the critical upgrade to go ahead.

“The existing bridge was flooded in 2007 and again in the April 2015 superstorm. As a result it’s in poor condition and was identified as a structure requiring upgrading. Council would like to construct a bridge with a higher deck that will ensure increased access for residents during a flood event.”

The new bridge will also have an open load limit enabling better access for heavy vehicles travelling in the Cessnock Local Government Area. Currently heavy vehicles are forced to take detours to get to their destinations.

Council is contributing $340,900 from its 2020-21 Bridge Construction Program and $309,100 from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program to complete the replacement. Council has also applied for additional funding for this project under the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges Program.

Council looks forward to progressing the upgrade with designs to be commenced this financial year.
