Cessnock City Council is pleased to announce the securing of $1.72 million to improve the safety of George Downes Drive and Great North Road, Bucketty.

The significant grant from the 20/21 NSW Safer Roads Program will enable Council to deliver improvements to a 700 metre section of the road.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said “It’s a stretch of road that is in dire need of improvement to ensure a safer journey, especially as more and more visitors travel into the Cessnock Local Government Area on unfamiliar roads.”

“This road is often frequented by motorcycle riders. The improvements will see the road shoulder widened, the installation of a motorcycle friendly safety barrier, and delineation improvements.”

“The Safer Roads Program is vital as it’s all about reducing crashes on our roads and ultimately saving lives. We’re pleased we can deliver these works for the community of Bucketty.”

Council is currently undertaking investigation and design processes to deliver the safety upgrades. Construction works are expected to commence next financial year.
