Cessnock City Council is excited to announce Damien Leith as our 2020 Australia Day Ambassador, who will no doubt give an entertaining address and performance as part of our local Australia Day celebrations.

Damien Leith is a multi-talented artist who has made his mark in Australia as a singer, songwriter, actor author, playwright and TV/radio host personality. Damien is also an avid storyteller and writes children’s literature.

This talented family man first captured the attention and affection of Australians when he contested in the 2006 edition of Australian Idol, a series he went on to win. Since then, his career has skyrocketed, but he has remained charming, grounded and modest, securing him a place as a popular and well-loved Australian.

When Damien is not touring and performing, he spends his time in his recording studio in the Hunter Valley where he is a highly sought after songwriter and producer.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said he looks forward to welcoming Damien back to the local government area and hearing about his experiences in the entertainment industry.

“It is an honour to have Damien as our Australia Day Ambassador this year and it will be wonderful to hear from him about his incredible journey since winning Australian Idol back in 2006.”

Local residents who would like to hear Damien share his story are encouraged to attend the Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremonies which will take place at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 10am to 12noon on Sunday 26 January.

As part of our local Australia Day celebrations, there will also be a BBQ breakfast in the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre courtyard from 8 to 10am, the fourth annual Mayor’s Cup Cricket Match at East End Oval from 12noon and there will be free entry to Cessnock and Branxton Pools between 10am and 4pm.

For those wanting to get in early with Australia Day celebrations, there will also be a free screening of Muriel’s Wedding at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 6.30pm on Friday 24 January 2020.
