Expressions of Interest - Floodplain Management Committee

Cessnock City Council will form a new Floodplain Management Committee following the December 2021 election with nominations for new members open now.

Council has declared positions on the committee vacant and is seeking expressions of interest for community representation on the committee, which includes Mayor Jay Suvaal, General Manager Lotta Jackson, Councillor Ian Olsen and Councillor Anne Sander (alternate).

As many as five community representatives are allowed, ideally two from the greater Cessnock area, one from the Greater Kurri Kurri area, one from the Greater Wollombi/Millfield area and one from the Rothbury/Branxton area.

It is important members of the community sit on the Floodplain Management Committee because locals understand the impacts of flooding, how floodwater moves in their local area and what the potential solutions might be.

Committee members should also be able to provide historical advice on local problems as well as consider in detail implications of matters which may impact the whole community.

Committee members will be required to attend as many as four meetings each year and provide input into the floodplain risk management process. The term of the committee aligns with the council term.

Applications are open now and close on Friday 18 March 2022. To apply, outline your experience and suitability in an email to council@cessnock.nsw.gov.au, being sure to include ‘Floodplain Management Committee’ in the subject line.
