Councillor Rod Doherty grew up in Newcastle and worked on Newcastle Harbour and for BHP as a tradesman before joining the NSW Ambulance. He moved to Kurri Kurri to work as an NSW Ambulance Officer in 1971. In 1981 Rod joined the Alcan Smelter at Kurri Kurri as an Employment and Community Relations Officer where he worked for 18 years. During his time with Alcan, he joined the Board of the newly established Cessnock Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) in 1992.
In 1988, Rod became involved with the Kurri Kurri Tidy Towns movement and business activities of the Kurri Kurri community in which he has been involved to this day. Rod managed the Hunter Region BEC for 10 years, is the former President of the Kurri Kurri District Business Chamber and a former member of the Kurri Kurri Rotary Club.
Rod has a keen interest in seeing economic development activities achieved and believes in providing much needed employment opportunities for the region.
