Council’s Road Maintenance section undertakes roads maintenance works throughout the Cessnock Local Government Area. The road areas are divided into three sections which are Urban Road Areas, Rural Road Areas and Main Road Areas.
Works for Urban Roads, Rural Roads, State Roads, Main Roads and Regional Roads are programmed from area inspections by Council Officers and Customer Requests that have been lodged with Council.
Typical work activities undertaken when Council staff are in each area may include road grading and shoulder grading, pothole patching, sign replacement, maintenance of pipe culverts and table drains, road verge slashing, kerb and gutter sweeping, guidepost replacement and sealing of road shoulders.

Urban Road Maintenance
Council's Urban Road network is divided into 12 areas;
- Bellbird and West Cessnock;
- Hospital Hill;
- South Cessnock, Kitchener, Abernathy and Kearsley;
- Aberdare;
- Neath and Abermain;
- Weston;
- Kurri Kurri - north of Lang Street
- Kurri Kurri - south of Lang Street
- Heddon Greta, Stanford Merthyr, Pelaw Main and Mulbring
- Nulkaba, North Rothbury and Branxton
- Greta
- Paxton, Ellalong and Millfield.
Maintenance works programmes are prepared for each area from Council inspections and customer requests, with maintenance works programmed for each area .
Council's Rural Road Network is divided into 4 areas;
- Wollombi/Laguna
- Pokolbin
- Keinbah and Blackhill
- Quorrobolong/Congewai

Main Road Maintenance
Council's Main Road maintenance network incorporates the following roads;
- Main Road 220 - Wine Country Drive from Branxton through Cessnock onto Lake Road, the Leggetts Lane to the Gap at Freemans Waterhole.
- Main Road 588 - Maitland Road, Cessnock from Vincent Street through to Kurri Kurri and onto John Renshaw to the Newcastle boundary south of Weakleys Drive, Beresfield.
- Main Road 527 - George Booth Drive off John Renshaw Drive at Buchanan to the Lake Macquarie boundary.
- Main Road 195 - Leggetts Lane from the intersection of Lake Road, Elrington through to Kurri Kurri and from Kurri Kurri to Lang Street through Heddon Greta to Testers Hollow at Cliftleigh.
- Main Road 181 - From Allandale Road, Cessnock through Bellbird, Millfield, Wollombi, Laguna to Settlers Road, Bucketty.
- Main Road 590 - From Settlers Road, Bucketty to the Gosford boundary via George Downes Drive.
- Main Road 453 - Elderslie Road from the New England Highway to the Singleton boundary.
- Main Road 7766 - Kurri Kurri from Northcote Street, Kurri Kurri via Mitchell Avenue, Government Road, Sawyers Gully Road, Old Maitland Road, Majors Lane and Camp Road to the New England Highway at Greta.
- Main Road 7767 - Broke Road from Wine Country Drive, Cessnock to the Singleton boundary west of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin.
Maintenance works programmes are prepared for each area from Council inspections and customer requests, with maintenance works programmed on a priority basis in accordance with the RTA Routine Maintenance Council Contract and Regional Road funding.
