Council has been informed by the RTA that triangular road markings or ‘Dragon’s Teeth’ markings are proposed to be painted at the start of each school zone in NSW and will be installed in school zones on a local government area (LGA) basis.
‘Dragon’s Teeth’ markings further increase the visibility of school zones for motorists and are proposed to provide a constant reinforcement to slow down to 40kmh around schools between 8am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm till 4pm.
This initiative, which was announced by the NSW Government in May 2009, is already used internationally and will be rolled out at all of NSW’s 10,000 school zones by the end of 2010.
The RTA will be writing to all School Principals in the area to advise them of the installations and will be asking school principals to assist the implementation process by informing their school communities.
Throughout the installation of ‘Dragon’s Teeth’ markings every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to the road network. However, there may be some minor inconvenience to local traffic flows.
If you would like further details about the rollout, please contact the RTA’s Ms Lynda Fairbairn, Acting Manager, Partnership on telephone (02) 8588 5827 or Council’s Traffic Engineering Officer, Mr John Carey on telephone (02) 4993 4261.
