NEW RESIDENTS GUIDE 25 G R O W The Cessnock LGA is an attractive, thriving and welcoming region which continues to grow and develop each and every year, The Hunter Regional Plan outlined Cessnock City Council would have a projected increase in dwelling approvals of 6,350 between 2016 and 2036 which averages 318 applications per year. This figure was exceeded by a whopping 44% in the 2016/17 financial year. The boom is set to continue with ongoing growth in new release areas including Huntlee and Cliftleigh. During this period of rapid growth, Council is striving to achieve the right balance between protecting the environment, supporting a healthy local economy and providing our community with affordable and effective access to community services and infrastructure. Council’s Economic Development Unit (EDU) works hard to support and increase opportunities for local businesses to thrive by expanding our region’s exposure and advocating for issues affecting the socio-economic sphere. The Cessnock LGA is home to Hunter Valley Wine Country, which is one of the top wine tourism destinations in Australia. Our region welcomes 1.5 million visitors per year and tourism is the largest employer, with the potential to grow further. While tourism is the largest employer, we have a diverse range of economic activities including mining, manufacturing, construction, agri-business, resource recycling and more. Council will continue to support the growth of our wonderful region and looks forward to welcoming more and more people to Cessnock City.
