Lost and Impounded Pets

Have you lost your cat or dog?

If you have lost your dog or cat please inform Council.

You will need your animal's microchip number or current address details to flag the animal as missing on the Companion Animal Register.

Please call Cessnock City Council (4993 4300) to report your animal missing.

You should also check with surrounding vet clinics.

Impounded Animals

Council Rangers will impound dogs when they are found straying. Rangers return the dog home after contacting the owner if the dog is identified by a collar, tag and/or microchip. Members of the public sometimes capture straying dogs and take them directly to the Animal Shelter. If your dog or cat is impounded and taken to the Animal Shelter you can incur costs for releasing your animals and fines may also apply.

Fines, Notices and Orders

After releasing your animal from Kurri Kurri Animal Shelter, you may receive further correspondence from Council about the incident that led to your animal being impounded. This may involve fines and/or notices and orders, depending on the circumstances.

Please Note:

Kurri Animal Shelter is now closed.  If you have lost your pet, please contact RSPCA Rutherford on 02 49391574.

If you would like to adopt an animal please contact RSPCA Rutherford on  02 49391555 or alternately visit the

RSCPA website to view all animals available for adoption.
