Cessnock City Council will make a submission on behalf of the Cessnock community in relation to the proposed 1000 bed expansion of the Cessnock Correctional Centre.

The NSW Government announced the latest plans to expand the facility in late July following an initial budget announcement in June.

Cessnock City Council welcomed the extension of the public submission period from Monday 8 August to Monday 22 August following community concern about the proposal.

Council will be seeking further information and will work collaboratively with the NSW Government agencies on aspects of the proposal that impact the local community and infrastructure.

The topics raised in the submission include:

  • protecting local amenity
  • concerns about lighting and noise
  • road maintenance and traffic
  • resourcing of local police and hospital facilities
  • environmental, economic and social impacts such as housing, education and family services

Cessnock City Council is keen to continuing their effective working relationship with the Cessnock Correctional facility and acknowledges the economic benefit and employment opportunities the facility provides.

Members of the community can make submissions before 5pm Monday 22 August by emailing cessnockcorrectionalcentre@jbaurban.com.au or calling 1800 743 436.
