Today students from across the Cessnock Local Government Area heard from guest speaker Paul ‘The Chief’ Harragon at the annual School Leaders’ Breakfast.

Cessnock City Council General Manager, Stephen Glen said the event is held as part of Local Government Week and is a unique opportunity for students to learn from people who have incredible stories to tell.

“I’d like to thank Paul Harragon for sharing some important life lessons and encouraging our local students to set their sights high”, said Mr Glen.

Giving the students an insight into the highs and lows of life as an elite athlete, Paul Harragon explained how he went about achieving his ultimate goal of playing for Australia.

Paul Harragon encouraged the students to start setting their own goals, even if it is just a few daily goals and then a weekly goal, it will get you in the habit of checking off things you have achieved.

“Then when you start working towards bigger goals never forget you will get tested along the way and the biggest tests come just before your goal is realised”.

Students and teachers were captivated by his charismatic presentation which included clips from throughout his career, his appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and his recent Coast to Coast trek of Papua New Guinea raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

The theme for Local Government Week 2016 is ‘Our Council, Our Community’ and is being celebrated by councils across NSW from August 1 – 7.
