Kurri Kurri High School and St Philips Christian College went head-to-head in this year’s Mayoral Debate Final at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre.

The teams debated the topic ‘That mental health has changed since the introduction of digital technology’ with St Philips Christian College arguing for the affirmative and Kurri Kurri High School for the negative.

The Adjudicators’ final decision saw St Philip’s Christian College take out the title which included $250 in prize money for their school.

Cessnock City Council General Manager, Stephen Glen said both teams were very well prepared and the research they had undertaken shone through during each speech.

“Each team shared interesting statistics and convincing perspectives on the topic, challenging the audience to really consider their point of view”.

“All the students who participated in the heats and the final should be very proud of their efforts, we are fortunate to have so many young, bright minds in our community”, Mr Glen said.

The Mayoral Debate has been running for seven years, with local business Rover Motors and the Cessnock Achievement Centre sponsoring the event.
