Innovation Lab launches at Cessnock City Libraries

Cessnock locals may soon be able to experience a tour of the Louvre in Paris or those with a taste for adventure may be able to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef with Sir David Attenborough.

Cessnock City Libraries launched the Innovation Lab, a space to explore and foster a social environment where anyone in the community can see, share, touch and play with virtual reality (VR) technologies.

The Innovation Lab was a vision of staff to create a new and fun learning environment for both students and lifelong learners. The vision was brought to life following a generous grant from the Weston Workers Club enabling the purchasing of VR equipment.

This unique and immersive form of interaction is increasingly being used for education and training with the potential to greatly enhance learning.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent is excited about the Innovation Lab after experiencing the technology firsthand.

“This is the first time I have had a go at virtual reality and it certainty lived up to expectations. I got up close and personal with a shark which had me on the edge of the seat as I explored the depths of the ocean.”

“This gave me a real insight in how beneficial this type technology will be for our community. Not just for the young but also for our older residents as it combines, relaxation, education and entertainment.”

"We are very proud of our library and their hard work in ensuring our community has access to the best possible experiences. Although we are only a small library service, Cessnock has a proven track record of sustained innovation and industry leadership as evidenced by our delivery of our popular coding workshops and now the launch of the Innovation Lab.”

Cessnock City Libraries hope to see this as a platform to revitalise the ‘after school’ culture and see more young patrons visiting the library to enjoy the world of reading, learning and to explore the plethora of resources the library holds.

Residents are encouraged to watch this space as the Innovation Lab will be integrated into the Cessnock Library’s ongoing programming for all ages. To keep up to date with your local libraries visit, www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/library
