Today almost a thousand children in the Cessnock Local Government Area were lucky enough to meet and listen to acclaimed children’s author and illustrator, Stephen Michael King to mark the start of Book Week 2018.   Stephen enthralled children from Kurri Kurri Primary School, St. Philips Christian College, Kitchener Public School, Millfield Public School and Cessnock West Primary School.

Stephen’s career has lead him down some very interesting paths including working for Walt Disney, designing puppets for TV and watching theatre companies bring his stories to life on the stage.

In just over twenty years he has created more than eighty illustrated books, many of them award winning.   The visit was a huge success, as Stephen talked to students about finding their own creative treasure, in drawing, writing and reading.

Cessnock City Council’s, Library Services Co-ordinator, Rose-marie Walters said that it was a great way to launch Book Week which officially kicks off on Monday 18 August and runs until Friday 24 August. The theme of this year’s Book Week is ‘Find Your Treasure.’

“Each year across Australia, Book Week brings children and books together in celebration of reading, libraries and Australian children’s literature. It was a privilege to have Stephen Michael King visiting Cessnock for this special week.”

The libraries team has a busy week ahead with lots planned to celebrate Book Week. The team will be visiting 15 schools. They will be storytelling and bringing the shortlisted books for the Australian Children’s Book of the Year Awards to life.
