Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent called it fitting that a Hunter author will be hosting Cessnock’s first Newcastle Writers Festival event.

“Cessnock City Libraries did an exceptional job in securing the partnership with the Festival, and it is great to see our region’s profile being lifted again with the inclusion of the Hunter’s very best selling crime novelist.”

Barry Maitland will host ‘Secret and Lies: An Evening with Michael Robotham’ on Saturday 7 April, 2018 giving the audience an opportunity to be exposed to two fantastic authors. Michael was an investigative journalist working across America, Australia and Britain. As a journalist he has investigated notorious cases such as the serial killer couple Fred and Rosemary West. He has also worked with clinical and forensic psychologists as they helped police investigate complex, psychologically driven crimes.

Michael's 2004 debut thriller, The Suspect, sold more than one million copies around the world. It is the first of eight novels featuring clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin, who faces his own increasing battle with a potentially debilitating disease. Michael has also written four standalone thrillers. In 2015 he won the UK's prestigious Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award with his stand-alone thriller Life or Death. His most recent book is The Secret She Keeps.

Barry is the author of the acclaimed Brock and Kolla series of crime mystery novels set in London, as well as the Australian mystery thriller Bright Air and the new Belltree Trilogy. With his background in crime fiction he will certainly make a fantastic host.
