Big Australia Day ahead for Cessnock
members of the community are invited to Cessnock City Council’s Australia Day
celebrations on the Friday 26 of January. A huge range of activities have been
planned which includes welcoming Australia’s newest citizens, recognising those
in our community who do an outstanding job, sharing a bite to eat and enjoying
the second annual Mayoral Cup Cricket.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it is important that we recognise as a community how lucky we are to call Australia home.
“On Australia Day we celebrate our wonderful unique culture and our people. We also welcome new Australians and it is with great pride I welcome the newest members of our community on this special day,” said Cr Pynsent.
The day will kick off with a Citizenship Ceremony and the Australia Day Awards at the East Cessnock Bowling Club from 10am to 12noon. The official proceedings will be followed by a FREE BBQ lunch from 12pm to 2pm at East End Oval, Victoria Street and the Mayor’s Cup Twenty20 Cricket Match.
The free community event was held for the first time last year and was a chance to watch local first grade cricketers from the Cessnock LGA go head to head.
Residents are encouraged to cheer on local players and enjoy a family day out with free face painting for the kids.
The game commences at 12:30pm with the presentation of the trophy at 3:30pm
The weather will likely be warm so be sure to pack a hat, sunscreen and a comfy chair to sit on for the oval activities.
