As part of the Cemeteries Masterplan, Kurri Kurri Lawn Cemetery is set for an expansion to guarantee a future resting place for those in the community who want it.

Council understands the importance of continued provision of burial plots for deceased loved ones. The Cemeteries Masterplan currently on exhibition outlines the future of resting places in our local government area.

Increasing demand for space in cemeteries is an issue that many Metro areas are facing. The growing pressure on availability has led to alternatives options like leased plots being considered, a disturbing possibility that will not be available in the Cessnock Local Government Area.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said we’re working hard to ensure minimal disruption to cemetery visitors during this project.

“We thank the community for the patience as we undertake this upgrade to an important community facility and stress that all current burial sites will not be impacted by the extension.”

Works at Kurri Kurri Lawn Cemetery will start in March. These works include the installation of automatic irrigation, concrete beams for lawn interments, turf, construction of roadways, paths and landscaping. The majority of works will occur during weekdays to minimise disruption to visitors during peak weekend periods.
