Gordon Williams Memorial Lawn Cemetery set to expand

Cessnock City Council will soon commence work to expand Gordon Williams Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Aberdare.

Cessnock City Council will soon commence work to expand Gordon Williams Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Aberdare.

These works form part of the 2012 Masterplan which was developed in close consultation with the community to ensure the site met the future needs of our region.

The expansion of the site will include an extension of the lawn cemetery, construction of an internal roadway, associated drainage works and landscaping.

Works will commence on Monday 14 August and are expected to completed by October 2017, weather depending.   While there will be no disruption to existing internments and burial plots, access may be limited during some of the works and this will be well communicated to cemetery visitors.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent understands the sensitive nature of these works and asks for the community to be patient during this time.

“Council staff will be completing the project and will work closely with local funeral directors and community members to ensure minimal disruption.”

“We are also about to kick off a community engagement project on our region’s future internment needs including access to memorial parks and cemeteries, which I encourage people to take part in,” added Cr Pynsent
