To celebrate NAIDOC Week, Cessnock City Library is once again holding a Native Plant Giveaway on Wednesday 11 July 2018 during normal library opening hours.

Library members can present their library card to receive one free native plant per household. For those who don’t have a library card, it’s a great time to join!

The NAIDOC Week native plant giveaway was extremely popular last year and this year's plants are the shrub sized Heath Banksia (Banksia Ericifolia) and Carpobrotus Glaucescens (Pig Face Daisy).

Both plant varieties that are being given away were used as traditional Bush Tucker plants. Banksia flowers were soaked in water to produce a sweet, high-energy drink and the fruit of the Pig Face daisy has a flavour described by some as like salty strawberry and the juice from the leaves was used to soothe stings or burns.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent is encouraging locals to join the library and take home one of these wonderful plants.

“The native plant giveaway is a sustainable way to celebrate NAIDOC Week. It greens our city as well as encouraging existing and new members to visit the library.”

Make sure you don’t miss out on these amazing plants as it’s only while stocks last!
