NSW Fair Trading Workshops @ the Library
Cessnock City Library Service will host two free and informative workshops from NSW Fair Trading in October and November, covering the topics of scams and funerals.
The first workshop will take place at Kurri Kurri Library on Thursday 24 October from 10.30am to 12noon, covering the topic of scams.
Last year, Australians lost almost half a billion dollars to scammers. Investment scams were the most financially devastating at $86 million and dating and romance scams also represented significant losses, increasing from $42 million in 2017 to $60.5 million in 2018.
Come along and hear a team member from NSW Fair Trading speak about how to protect yourself and how to report a scam if it happens to you.
The second workshop will be held at Cessnock Library on Thursday 28 November from 10.30am to 12noon, covering the topic of funerals.
A team member from NSW Fair Trading will speak about pre-paid funeral arrangements, other funeral products and using a funeral director.
Library Services Co-ordinator, Rose-marie Walters said these are important workshops for all members of the community.
“Scams are designed to trick you into giving away your money or your details and they succeed because they look like the real thing. Pre-paid funerals are a popular product, but people should be aware of provider obligations and their rights under consumer law.”
Morning tea will be provided and bookings are essential. Book online under ‘Events and Bookings’ at libraries.cessnock.nsw.gov.au, or by phoning Cessnock Library on 4993 4399 or Kurri Kurri Library on 4937 1638.
