Cessnock City Council is proud to support Right to Know Week 2019 as an official Right to Know Champion.

Cessnock City Council is proud to support Right to Know Week 2019 as an official Right to Know Champion.

Right to Know Week NSW runs from 30 September to 6 October and is a campaign that aims to raise awareness of a person’s right to government held information and encourage people to take an active interest in their right to access information.

This year’s theme is, Access to information: Leaving no one behind in the digital age, which focuses on the ways accessing government information has not only changed, but become more efficient with the introduction of better technologies.

The key objective of the Government Information Public Access Act 2009 NSW (GIPA Act) is to advance a system of responsible and representative government that is open, accountable, fair and effective. The GIPA Act provides citizens with the right to access most government information held by government agencies, state-owned corporations, local councils, ministers and their staff, and universities.

Cessnock City Council proactively publishes information on our website under the Access to Information page to make it easy for the community to access. Council also offers further assistance to individuals seeking to access government information that is not already public while at the same time meeting its obligations under the same or other relevant legislation.
