Cessnock City Council is encouraging interested residents to attend an upcoming community meeting on Tuesday 27 February in Abermain, to discuss the future of Swamp Creek, in Abermain.

The meeting has been called as Council prepares to apply for an Environmental Trust Restoration Grant. The funding identified as a new opportunity to reduce flood impacts and to improve the environmental health of the creek.

Council has been advised the success of the grant is dependent on the establishment of a new Landcare group to assist in the restoration of Swamp Creek.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said the Local Landcare Coordinator for the Lower and Mid Hunter is attending the meeting to discuss how to set up a Landcare group.

“Community support is vital to securing this funding, we need a dedicated group of people to manage the hand clearing and ongoing restoration activities at Swamp Creek.”

Council is planning to apply for a grant worth $100,000 to support the mechanical clearing of a section of Swamp Creek from railway embankment to Mary Street in Abermain.

Please RSVP via email to martin.conner@cessnock.nsw.gov.au if you are able to attend or if you are interested in participating but cannot attend the meeting.
