12 winners of the 2016 Mayoral Academic Scholarships were announced last night at an official presentation at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre in front of a large crowd of sponsors, Councillors, scholarship applicants and their family and friends.

Some were completely surprised, and others beaming with pride, as each made their way onto the stage to accept a cheque worth $2,500 to assist with their academic studies.

Council received applications from students across the local government area for the 2016 scholarships and the successful applicants were chosen through an interview selection process.

Most students applied for the scholarships to assist with university fees, travel costs to and from university and TAFE and text book expenses.

“I believe the scholarships not only help students financially to achieve their academic goals but provide them with important recognition they are on the right track,” said Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent.

“Since the inception of the academic scholarships in 2002, we have been able to assist 190 students with a magnificent total of $475,000 in grants.”
