2016 NSW Local Government Election

The NSW Electoral Commission is required by legislation to conduct the 2016 local council elections on Saturday 10 September, unless advised otherwise. A dedicated website has been launched for those elections. The website address is:

Candidate Briefings

To ensure that all candidates are aware of the requirements and challenges of civic life, Council will be hosting candidate briefings over the coming week, in partnership with Local Government NSW. Learning outcomes of the workshops include:  

  • Identify the key requirements for becoming a Councillor.
  • Recognise how the Councillor role fits in with other roles and various levels of government.
  • Address their key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a Councillor.
  • Know how the Councillor role fits in with the Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework.
  • Identify key elements of Council meetings, including code of conduct and conflicts of interest.  

Sessions have been scheduled for Wednesday, 3 August 2016 from 10am – 1pm and Thursday, 4 August 2016 from 6pm-9pm in the Cessnock City Council Chambers (rear entry via Cumberland Street).   Registrations to attend the briefings are compulsory and should be submitted to Kim Appleby, Council’s Manager Governance and Business Services on 4993 4184 or no later than Friday, 29 July 2016. 


Non-Residential Rolls  

If you are an owner, rate-paying lessee or occupier of rateable land which is not your primary residence, you or a nominee may be entitled to be enrolled on the roll of non-residential owners of rateable land or the roll of occupiers and rate-paying lessees for this election.

The claim must be completed and lodged with Cessnock City Council on or before 6.00pm Monday, 1 August 2016.   If a claim for non-residential enrolment was made for a previous Council election, and you wish to claim enrolment for this election you must re-apply.
