Councillor Ian Olsen
Councillor Olsen is one of the longest serving Councillors, having first been elected in 1995 and consistently on Council since 2004. He originally joined Council as a father of a young family who was concerned about the direction Cessnock was heading. He was born and bred in Ward B and has always lived in the ward he represents.
A boiler maker by trade, Cr Olsen has had jobs in heavy industry his whole life. He has worked in a variety of engineer shops, spent five years in the coal industry and dedicated 11 years to the aluminium smelter. He is now a maintenance overseer.
Cr Olsen is passionate about improving roads and making sure Cessnock local government area has quality developments where the developers pay their way. He would also like to see a new aquatic centre for Cessnock.
Cr Olsen was a soccer coach for 20 years but has concentrated on his marathon running of late. He completed the New York and Chicago marathons in 2014 and the London Marathon earlier this year. His goal is to complete the six majors by the end of 2016. He has plans to also run in the Berlin, Tokyo and Boston marathons.
