Free testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation

The NSW Government is aware that a property in the Greater Newcastle region contains loose-fill asbestos insulation and free testing is being offered to owners of pre-1980s homes.

Loose-fill asbestos is raw, crushed asbestos that was installed as insulation. It’s different from other types of asbestos like fibro sheeting or roofing. This type of insulation is hazardous because over time, airborne fibres can move into the living areas of a home.

The NSW Government has determined that demolition and comprehensive site remediation is the only long-term solution for homes affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation.

If your home is affected there is financial assistance and options are available to you and your family. Homes containing loose-fill asbestos may be difficult to sell or rent.

If you don’t know the history of your property or the type of ceiling insulation it has, get a free test for loose-fill asbestos. It only takes a few minutes to register. Go to loosefillasbestos.nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 1300 784 379.

NSW Fair Trading staff will be on hand on the following dates and times in the Cessnock LGA to answer your questions about registering your home for free testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation:

  • Cessnock City Council Admin Building Monday 9 July 11am – 5pm
  • Ritchie's IGA Kurri Kurri Tuesday 10 July 11am-5pm
  • Bunnings Cessnock Thursday 26 July 8.30am– 1pm
